Jaysus, would ya believe it? The Irish women’s rugby team only went and shocked the world, didn’t they? With a heart-stopping 29-27 win over the Black Ferns, Ireland has kicked off their WXV1 campaign in style, leaving the reigning world champions scratching their heads in Vancouver. Go on, the girls!
From Tries to Triumph – The Irish Show Their Mettle!
You wouldn’t believe it unless you saw it – Erin King scoring in the final minute to level the match, and then up steps Dannah O’Brien, cool as you like, to slot the winning conversion. Off the post, mind you! Could there be a more dramatic way to win? I doubt it!
The Black Ferns came into this one full of confidence – sure why wouldn’t they? They had most of the possession and even had three tries disallowed by the TMO. But Ireland wasn’t having any of it. Oh no, they were out for blood, and they took every chance that came their way. Five tries later, and the Ferns didn’t know what hit them!
New Zealand Strike Early, But the Irish Fight Back
Atlanta Lolohea got the Kiwis off to a flying start, crossing the line after just nine minutes. Renee Holmes slotted the conversion and tacked on a penalty after our very own Aoife Wafer crashed over for her first of two tries. The nerves were jangling for a bit, but you know the Irish – we don’t go down easy.
Wafer was at it again, grabbing her second try just after the half-hour mark, and if that wasn’t enough, Neve Jones from Gloucester-Hartpury dived over before the break. Suddenly, Ireland was ahead, 17-10, and the crowd was starting to sense something special. The Ferns pulled it level again just before halftime with Katelyn Vahaakolo scoring, and Holmes adding another conversion. The match was on a knife-edge, and you could feel the tension rising.
The Black Ferns Hit Back – But Ireland Won’t Be Denied
Holmes knocked over a penalty just before the hour to put the Kiwis back in front, and with Niamh O’Dowd sitting in the sin-bin, it looked like the Ferns might edge away. But not on your life! The Irish dug deep, and Erin King powered over for her first try, putting Ireland back in the lead. The upset was starting to feel real.
But typical of the world champs, New Zealand weren’t finished yet. Mererangi Paul finished off a stunning move, and with Holmes converting again, the Ferns took a five-point lead. Most teams might’ve crumbled, but this is Ireland we’re talking about. With the bit between their teeth, they piled on the pressure and when King got over for her second, the stage was set.
O’Brien Seals the Deal!
With the whole stadium holding its breath, Dannah O’Brien stepped up for the conversion that would write her name into the history books. The ball flew through the air, kissed the post, and sailed over! Game, set, and match – Ireland 29, New Zealand 27. Absolute scenes, I tell ya!
What’s next for our heroes? Ireland takes on hosts Canada this Saturday, and if there’s any justice in the world, we’re in for another cracking game, want to bet on it?
Oh, and for those of you who fancy a flutter on the next game – well, don’t say we didn’t hint at it! You wouldn’t want to miss out on the action, right?
